Nick's Inner Monologue Admittedly Ive been an ass lately...but I have to pull the diabetes card on this one...we have been cutting a new album, and laying tracks for this movie, traveling back and fourth, its exhausting and stressful and sometimes its hard to keep my sugar in check, half the time I don't even realize Im grumpy until someone is yelling at me or hitting me for something Ive said or done. B lets me know when Im out of line...she is the first to slap me upside the head or tell me Im being a jerk...she's also the easiest at forgiving, its not ME when I get like that...she understands...Livie on the other hand is having a little more trouble... (Whispered conversation between Nick and Livie in the SUV on the way to set) (Nick) *nudges Livie's shoulder* are you still mad at me (Olivia) *shrug* are you still a complete asshole? (Nick) guess I deserve that...Im sorry (Olivia) You GUESS? *catching the attention of B and Joe with her raised voice* (Nick) I didn't mean to be an ass... (Olivia) yea, well you were...*hissed tone* (Nick) It's not really something I can control...I wish I could (Olivia) yea, me too, its getting old fast (Nick) WOW...thanks for understanding (Olivia) I AM understanding...I just don't appreciate being called a bitch because you are having a sugar meltdown and then being expected just to shrug it off because of the diabetes....my mom was a drunk...and she would do and say mean hurtful things when she was drunk but she was still held ...

The US Border Patrol has reinvented the concept of "illegal immigrant" to mean Mexican immigrant, history professor Kelly Lytle-Hernandez says in today's UCLA News Week videocast. Drawing on research for her new book, Lytle-Hernandez discusses how the Border Patrol's role has evolved dramatically since the agency was established in 1924 to control illegal Asian and European immigration. "What the Border Patrol does is they take that abstract thing called the 'illegal alien' and they literally bring people to that. They embody this category for us. They define it for us in a social way that we can understand it and we can see it," Lytle-Hernandez says. "The illegal alien embraces a large category of people. But what the Border Patrol does is they narrow what we understand as the undoucmented immigrant as the Mexican immigrant." These stories are also featured in this edition of UCLA News Week.
